EDIT - Oh gods I made a fatal mistake having my arrows point to the wrong parts of the text box. What is wrong with me today? I have a serious case of the derps.
I just made this quick after reading a few comics where the lettering wasn't all that tight. I suppose most people don't notice this kind of thing... but I notice when text in bubbles doesn't have a nice shape.
Having a look around I haven't seen many tutorials on the subject, and the ones that do aren't very thorough... So here you go, the methods and rules I use when I put words in speech bubbles. It's not the only way, but in my opinion, it yields nice results.
Goddam I wish I had time to draw my own comics... Soon guys, soon. ;_;
